TITLE: CRYOPRESERVATION INTRODUCTION Cell lines are stored using cryopreservation. A cryoprotective agent (dimethyl sulfoxide) is added to the culture which is frozen at a computer-programmed cooling rate. Frozen ampoules are stored in liquid nitrogen at -196 C. A batch of ampoules is prepared which are then stored either as a seeding stock (master bank) or as a distribution stock (working bank). The frozen reservoir in the seeding stock is used to replenish the distribution stock. Guidelines prepared for CABRI by CERDIC, DSMZ, ECACC, INRC, November 1998
